I made a character and the difficulty I selected doesn't suit me anymore. How do I change it?

You can't change the difficulty by design after you create the character. But if you don't mind cheating these official rules, you can find your character save file in this folder (or its equivalent in other OSes):
Open the desired player file (you can figure out which one you want by looking at last modified date) with Notepad++ or a similar text editor which lets you see the special characters. Difficulties will look like this:
Note the
user1306322user1306322ACK
in Casual difficulty. This special character is important because it won't work if you just type 'casual' in a regular text editor and leave the invisible BS
before it. The game won't recognize the player file, but it won't delete it. You can just edit back or use Notepad++ to fix this.4,8401515 gold badges5050 silver badges106106 bronze badges
In addition to savegame hacking, there are also various mods available which enable/disable certain difficulty-specific features.
For example, there are mods which enable hunger on casual difficulty or disable pixel and/or item dropping on death. So when there is one specific aspect of the difficulty level you've chosen which bothers you, you can change that one aspect through modding.

Want to Change your Character's Name and Appearance in Skyrim?
Important:You can only change your character's appearance and name if you have the PC version of Skyrim.
With all of the character customization options that you get with Skyrim, it's easy to go overboard and choose an appearance for your character that's exciting at first, but then quickly loses its appeal.
If you've already invested dozens of hours in your character, earned a ton of gold, and completed numerous quests, it's not surprising if you don't want to go back and do it all over again with a new character just to change the way you look. Fortunately, there is a way to change your character's name and appearance later in the game by using the console. Read on to learn how.
Note: You can also use this to change your sex if you want, just don't change your race! (See the notes later on.)
Before we begin, don't forget the number one rule of modding: Always make a new save before making any changes to your character's appearance or name, like you should for all console changes. This will allow you to revert to a working saved game if for some reason changing your character causes any problems.
To change your character's appearance:
- Open the console by pressing '~', which is located in the top left corner of standard North American keyboards.
- Type showracemenuin the console and hit Enter. This will pull up the character creation screen that you first came across when you initially created your character.
- Press the '~' again to close the console so that you can start making changes.
- You can change anything about your character's appearance, including the gender. Avoid changing the race, though, as it may mess up your stats. (More on this below.) When you are done, just select 'Done.'
- You will be prompted to re-enter your character's name and the game will resume.
To change your character's name:
- If you just want to change your character's name, you don't have to make any changes to your appearance, just select 'Done' and type your new name.
Warning: Changing Your Race Changes Your Stats
If you change your character's race, your stats will change as well. This is because each race in Skyrim has different strengths and weaknesses—these are reflected in the different starting levels in different skills. Therefore changing your race should, in theory, change your skill levels because your old racial modifiers will be removed and your new racial modifiers will be applied. However, this isn't the case. Instead, changing your race may result in the following:
- Mismatched experience and skill levels. Unfortunately, the game doesn't automatically allocate your previous experience with the same skills that you've built up while playing, so your new skill levels won't match the levels you had before. In fact, it seems to just sort of dump all of your experience into Destruction and Restoration (at least in all my attempts.)
- Rebalancing your stats and changing levels. Even worse, it affects more than your skill levels. Changing your race also leads to the effect of either rebalancing your Magicka, Health, and Stamina stats by setting them as all equal, or it'll set them all to 100. The changes to your skills may also result in your level changing as well.
- Losing particular racial powers. Changing your race may also cause you to lose the racial power you had when you started the game, but won't necessarily add the racial power for your new race.
All in all, changing your race using showracemenu is a bad idea.
Using SetRace and SetPlayerRace to Change Your Race
Can you change your race without using showracemenu? You can use the console commands setraceraceId or setplayerrace raceId (you need to change raceId to the ID of the race, like ImperialRace or KhajiitRace, etc.) to change your character's race. However this has the unfortunate side effect of causing the game to forget where your head texture is located: the next time you load the game, your head will be missing!
Therefore, there is no known way to permanently alter your character's race without causing a bug of some sort.
The weight slider allows you to adjust your character's build, but it doesn't give you any control over the character's size. If you want to make your character taller or shorter, therefore, you have to use the console.
To change your character's size:
- Open the console '~' and type: player.setscalex.x (where x.x is the scale you would like your character to be set at—for example, setting your character's scale to 0.98 will make them a little smaller, and 1.02 will make them a little taller. The default is 1.0.)
- Type '~' again to close the console when you're done.
- You can check the current scale of your character by typing player.getscale (you don't need to provide a number.)
Note: Don't go crazy with these settings because it's very easy to blow your character way out of proportion. (Unless, of course, that's what you want to do.) Usually adjusting them by .2 or .3 is enough to get the effect you're looking for. If you make your character too small or too big, you may run into gameplay issues. (For example, I set one character to 0.5 and after a couple of minutes they started to run really slowly.)
As always, use console commands at your own risk.
Play as a Non-Player Character
Starbound Player Editor
In response to a number of requests, I've started uploading screenshots of the slider settings for various NPCs from Skyrim.
You can use these settings to make your character look like another character from the game (tweaking them however you like, of course) or, if you're a PC gamer, use the plugins or save files I've created to play as one of these characters 'out of the box.'
If you have any special requests, just shoot me an email or comment below.
- Sorry..I can't remember..I went to a pgae that had a listing of all in-game characters that you could download and play as..I can't recall how I got there or the page..would somebody please give me the URL to get there.
- I just wanted to add that as far as appearance goes, you can still change your characterif you play on consoles, but not your race or name. Just go to the Ragged Flagon and pay the creepy lady on the bench by the water 1,000 Septims. You can change your appearance as many times as you like that way, but if you are a vampire or werewolf she will not allow you to do it.
- xbox360 and ps3 u just go to riften near thieves guild and talk to the altmer lady
- For XBox 360:1. Copy profile and gamesave from 360 to flash drive2. On the PC extract the gamesave with Modio or Horizon3. Get your gamesave which should be a .exs4. Change the extension to a .ess5. Load the .ess file on Skyrim for PC6. Follow the tutorial7. Save the game8. Get the .ess file and change back to a .exs9. Inject to flash drive with Mod
- I use the same character appearance I use in Saints row IV (to do this, I needed mods), so is unlikely i will grow sick of him. I will edit him more to make him match, or at least to make him closer to his saints row counterpart (I already succeeded for most part)
- Had a wood elf character, I changed his height only by 1.075, and one of the shop owners in Skyrim referred to me as a nord..
- This one is very pleased with your insights, friend. May your path lead you to warm sands.
- wow, this is very helpful! now I don't have to start all the training again just to change my character hair. thank you so much for sharing this
- When I did it and tried to change my name, it showed some weird code(like ,1000140 or something) and wouldn't let me back out.
- They really do need to add a change character appearance option into the game.
- It really rox
- @Justin D on my ps3 it only shows the last 4 times I've saved so how do i change my character, I'm so far into the game i don't want to start over. I'm just wondering how to change my character?
- I should have clarified, but this glitch was tested and replicated succesfully on the Xbox 360, current with Skyrim's latest patch as of 02/08/12
- Alright, I can do Justin D's glitch with a 100% success rate. I actually ran into it by myself by accident, and it took me quite awhile to replicate the bug. Justin is on the right track, but he's missing a few crucial steps. This is what MUST be done, and I tested it for days.1. Preset has to be the same, as Justin said2. Weight has to be the same, as Justin said3. Sex, race, and preset, as Justin saidNow for what Justin DIDN'T say4. All facial 'types' must match the base model. For example, you have the second nose selected for the character you want to edit. To re-edit him, you HAVE to select the SAME nose type or the glitch will not work. This goes for colors, too, and hair and facial hair styles. Make EVERYTHING match, but do NOT worry about the proportion sliders. Like the nose example, it has to be the same 'type', but you can shape it however you want with the proportion sliders.5. Eye color MUST be the same6. Scars must match. If they are present. I tested this and I found that ADDING a scar will cause the glitch to fail, but adding warpaint CAN be done. I do not know why.7. Even the minute details MUST match. Even mouth type, but colors as well. This includes lip color, eyeliner, and any eye shadow, etcAnd bam, those are the missing keys to the puzzle. Obviously, due to everything needing to macth, the glitch isn't too terrible useful except to maybe give your guy minor tweaks. Say you made his eyes up a bit to high, you can lower them, or trim down his nose or adjust his jawline, etc. You cannot give him a haircut or add scars, but you CAN add warpaint.Final detail: The game uses your original base model for any modification. Transforming into a werewolf and back will reset your face to what it was when you first made him, and becoming a vampire will do the same. Conclusion: You can tweak the face, but ultimately, only gonna be useful for the really nit picky or for those who wanna try out new warpaint. WHIIIICHHHH in and of itself is actually kinda cool. I did not test if removing the warpaint is possible. The change is permanent, and can only be undone by becoming a vamp/werewolf, OR loading your previous save on a separate memory unit (flash drive), then loading your your other save again after will change him back if you screwed up. Keep in mind the change will affect ALL of your saves with that character, even if the image on the save doesn't reflect the changes. So don't freak out, it's still easily reversible, and if you don't have a flashdrive, vampirism is easily cured and can be contracted endlessly. And yeah, the guy that does the ritual is immortal and can't die, and if your a werewolf, transform ONCE and back again and your golden. Enjoy
- An excellent article - thanks so much!
- What type of Hide Armour is that?
- Justin, On Xbox if we do what you said with the glitch can we then load back to where we were currently playing with our new appearance or would we have to start completely over?
- Interestingly enough your perks remain after changing your race with showracemenu. Fortunately i can now increase once more my levels sky high with blacksmithing (which in my case was reset). Archery is way too high though. Anyway it seems interesting (thank god i had already made the damn dragon armor).
- Haha, don't lose your head over it. xD Still laughing.. Heeehhhh..
- The trick to using Showracemenu bug free is not to switch to a diff race or to a preset, if you leave these untouched you should be able to still chance scars, hair, skin tone, etc.TIP- If you see your avatar arms cross, you've changed something and reset the majority of your stats to LVL 1 ranks; and must restart your save.
- Justin I have tried following your steps but it doesn't seem to work. Can you perhaps make a video, or post a more detailed description of how you got it to work? I think it would be really helpful for all the Xbox 360 owners who have Skyrim. Thanks!
- I play on Xbox 360 and have found a glitch which allows you to change your appearance on any character. What you must do is:1. make a save with the character you want changed2. load the first save of the game where you are still the nord prisoner (before you customize your character)3. choose the same race, sex, preset, and weight as the character you want to change4. once you have done that, you may change the face however you want, DO NOT name your character5. load the save you made in step 1. Portal 2 save location.Presto! Your character will look like the one you were just making. I've done this twice now in a row and it worked perfectly each time as long as you start with the same preset and weight. May work on PS3, but I don't have one so I cannot confirm.
- i play on xbox 360, is there anyway to change it on there? cause i hit 'b' on accdent and canceled all of it and i didn't think it was a big deal at the time cause i thought i could change it, but so far i don't think you can:( so do you think there is a way? or they might come out with it in the furture?
- my advice is to write down all your skill levels, shouts learned, etc. even your health, magicka and stamina levels.. save that for later. Now look online for the way to alter those stats which is 'player.setav (skill) (number value of skill desired)' Write all of these in one text(txt) file, one on each line. It'll be kind of long because you need a line for every skill, your health/magicka/stamina bars and your shouts. I think that's all the stats it will mess up. Once you've saved this as a filename you'll remember (in .txt format) save it in your Skyrim directory in My Computer. Right inside the skyrim folder. Load up the game, go to the character that has the now messed up stats from changing race.. type in the console command 'bat (name of file)' and enter. It will run through all the commands you entered in the text file and bring your character back to what it was before you altered its race. Now, if you ever want to alter your character again, you just load that file up, update it to what you are now before changing.. make your changes, then run that file again. Best workaround I came up with.

Changing a stance from starcheat removes the character from the selection library. |

I couldn't reproduce this, so at least not all personalities from all races are affected. Can you please add some detail to which personality of which race you have changed your character and if that was the only change you did. Providing logs and the corrupted player file would be helpful too. |

Sure. Can do. I'll copy my starbound directory for you in dropbox. At the time it was a Human(F), and I changed from Personality 5 to Personality 4. Link to dropbox below: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8u21xsqgwfef4j9/player.rar?dl=0 |

Thusfar I've tried duplicating the issues using completely new characters and modifying variables in Starcheat and nothing seems to be triggering the characters to not appear on a NEW character. I believe it may have something to do with mission completion flags triggering that might be causing some issues. |
commented Jan 31, 2015
Hmmm. An interesting thing of note. Since the character no longer shows up after this bug occurs, It allows you to create a character with the same name in game, after exiting starbound and opening starcheat, and deleting the corrupted character, the other character with the same name instantly pops up. |

I was having the same issue, and yes I tried editing appearance as a whole, which maybe it's the appearance section that's causing the bug I've really no idea. I had starcheat work before but the conditions triggering the bug are unknown to me. |
commented Jan 31, 2015
Alright, so as far as I can tell it's in the appearance section, if I leave the appearance be, everything else seems to work. |

I was doing some trial and error. Appearance and Tech can bug the game, so if you choose to learn all tech do not equip the tech until you're in the game otherwise you may bug the character. |
commented Jan 31, 2015
I didn't even edited the tech or appearance.. and it corrupted my save. |

Can confirm, editing characters (happened while editing Tech) corrupts the character file, 'No such key in Variant::get('module')'. This happened to me in the Nightlies aswell. |

I think it's mostly tech, they took some techs out, like the cameraman boost which corrupted the file in my tests. |

commented Feb 1, 2015
I can confirm what @TheDreamweaver said. Even though I didn’t touch the techs or anything, unequipping them in starcheat enabled me to see my character on the character select screen again. EDIT: Just having techs equipped, in general, after using starcheat will break your character. So it’s not linked to anything else and our appearance thing was merely coincidence. |

Ah only equipping not unlocking a tech causes the issue, so this should be easily reproducible by ourself. |

commented Feb 10, 2015
I'd actually like to apply a little update to what I had said before (In hopes people will respond). So just by testing and see if it was something that had been mentioned before to see if what everyone else had suggested may fix it (Like taking off all tech) but thats not the case. Apparently every character that I overlook in the starcheat application ends up being not even in-game when it gives you the character selection screen. It doesn't matter whether I add or modify anything or not it will still hide the character without me doing anything. Any help? |
commented Feb 10, 2015
I'm sorry you're having these issues, I saw the comment but I don't have any instant fixes up my sleeve The best thing you can do is upload a copy of at least one of the affected characters somewhere (metadata included) and a copy of your starbound.log file (in the Starbound giraffe_storage I think) immediately after you enter the character selection screen If starcheat itself is giving errors, upload a log of that, but don't bother if starcheat is acting normal |

Starcheat is acting normal the only abnormality I'm finding is that after I open a character using starcheat then go to the Starbound game that character is not in the character selection anymore, but still accessible using starcheat. @Lyynus i can't say for sure what's going one yet. for that last one, did you change the filename or anything like that? or is that just how it's ended up by itself? it is a long shot as well, but if you haven't already done so, i'd suggest deleting and reinstalling starbound from scratch, and trying it all again with no mods installed @chrmoritz not sure if you have any ideas or not but you probably wanna see this anyway, it's pretty unusual |
commented Feb 10, 2015
Wow.. thats unique. Other characters not used in starcheat work just fine and to my knowledge all my player files have been stored in the same place and had worked before just fine until yesterday when I had overlooked that character and (I think) only changed amounts in pixels I had then had it save before getting on Starbound, then I wasted a day testing theories and making new characters but it seems no matterr what I did as long as I at least opened a character in starcheat they did not load in the Starbound game. (I know Im probably repeating myself at this point, but I find it difficult to understand why the files would save else where and as to of what's corrupting them) I'm also not the only one a friend of mine is also experiencing the same problem and we wasted a day on collaborating to try and fix the issue, but that didn't seem to work out. Thanks for all your help. |

@Lyynus delete these 2 items these are the items specifically the projectileconfig numbers in both. they are too big for starbound to handle. i couldn't figure out the exact number that trips it but i can reliably cause the corruption by changing the numbers from low to very high. i can say it is somewhere between the highest 64 and 128 bit value i don't think this can really be something starcheat checks for you, it's gonna be something you just have to keep in mind while editing and playing with the mods. maybe it can be added someone on the wiki |

[01] How to open and edit Mass Effect 2 savegames
- If you have not done so, download Gibbed's Mass Effect 2 Save Editor
- locate and load the savegame you want to edit
Each Mass Effect 2 career have it's own unique directory. under Windows XP you can find the directory root folder here:
./Documents and Settings/YourComputerID/My Documents/BioWare/Mass Effect 2/Save - Make modifications and save the changes, then click on the 3rd icon (top left) that looks like an ancient 3.5' floppy disk, a window will pop up. Now you can change folder, overwrite or simply give your modified savegame a new name. If you give your save a new name, follow the naming restrictions to be safe i.e. if you do not want to overwrite your (example) Save_0001.pcsav save, then just save it as Save_0002.pcsav - when making major changes, try to not overwrite your original save if you messed up without knowing it.

[06] How to change 'colours' on hair, eyebrows, eyes, skins, etc
Interesting facts: Many don't notice it, but ME1 facial options contain broader colour ranges than the ones offered in ME2. For some very strange reason BioWare decided to normalize colour ranges for ME2. Thus, before Gibbed's Mass Effect 2 Save Editor, then only way to get Freemen (Dune) 'blue within blue' eyes was to make a character in ME1 and then import it into ME2 *without* doing extra modifications in the new facial editor. After lot's of tweaking here is my results..- Under the 'Raw' tab, '[-] 2. Squad', expand '[+] Player', expand [+] Appearance and then expand [+] Morph Head:
- Locate the 'Vector Parameters' field, click the left field (Collection) [..]
- Then decide on what you want to change:
How to change eye iris-colour:- Find the field: 'EYE_Iris_Colour_Vector' and press the (on the right side) '[+] value' field to have it expanded.
- Enter a new eye iris colour.
Important facts: At first the numbers can look quite overwhelming, but they are actually simple R G B values that can be rounded down or up.
To get you started I'll post some interesting eye iris colour values (don't be afraid to experiment yourself). Please be advised that I'll post 'direct' colour ranges (example): '0,9, 0,0, 0,0, 1' which you translate to this for the expanded '[+] value' field:
A: 1
B: 0,0
G: 0,0
R: 0,9
Red eyes (normal): 0,1, 0,0, 0,0, 1
Red eyes (light): 0,9, 0,0, 0,0, 1
Red eyes (glowing): 0,10, 0,0, 0,0, 1
Red eyes (spooky): 0,20, 0,0, 0,0, 1
Blue eyes (unnatural): 0,0, 0,0, 0,1, 1
Blue eyes (artificial): 0,0, 0,0, 0,9, 1
Blue eyes (glowing): 0,0, 0,0, 0,10, 1
Blue eyes (spooky): 0,0, 0,0, 0,20, 1
Purple eyes (light): 1, 1, 6, 1
Purple eyes (glowing): 1, 1, 10, 1
Grey eyes (normal): 0,7893139, 0,7372048, 0,6592241, 1
Gray eyes (nearly white) 0,9893138, 0,9372048, 0,9592241, 1
White eyes (glowing): 10, 10, 10, 1
White eyes (spooky): 20, 20, 20, 1
Yellow eyes (glowing): 10, 10, 0, 1
To get totally unique 'black alien eyes' (more blackish than Drell) change:
Field: EYE_Iris_Colour_Vector: 0, 0, 0, 1
Field: EYE_White_Colour_Vector: 0, 0, 0, 1
To return to the original eyeball colour:
EYE_White_Colour_Vector (original value): 0,7893139, 0,6372048, 0,5592241, 1
To change skin colour find the field: 'SkinTone'
Vampire skin: 0,9592996, 0,7488649, 0,6083597, 1
Normal skin (whitish): 0,9592996, 0,6488649, 0,5083597, 1
Normal skin (basic): 0,7592996, 0,3488649, 0,2083597, 1

Ice queen: 1, 1, 4, 1
Hair and eye-brow colour:- Find the field: 'HED_Hair_Colour_Vector' (hair colour) and 'HED_Addn_Colour_Vector' (eye-brows) and press the (on the right side) '[+] value' field to have it expanded
- Enter a new colour..
- Save and load the Savegame in ME2

[07] How to save your face (for later use):
- open Gibbed's Mass Effect 2 Save Editor and load any savegame with a face you want to 'store'.
- click the 'Toolbox' tab
- click the 'Export' button.
Move out of the savegame directory and make a new folder in the Save-root folder called 'Faces'. - Save your 'face' with an self-explanatory title so you know what it is.
- open Gibbed's Mass Effect 2 Save Editor and load any savegame where you want to 'change' the face in.
- click the 'Toolbox' tab, and press the 'Import' button.
- Enter your 'face directory' and load the face you want.
- Save your changes.
[09] How to get the vanilla hero male/female poster face:
- open Gibbed's Mass Effect 2 Save Editor and load any savegame where you want to have the 'poster face'.
- Under the 'Raw' tab, '[-] 2. Squad', and a expanded '[+] Player' expand '[+] Appearance', locate the field called: 'Has Morph Head', and change 'True' to 'False'.
Interesting facts: to change the 'poster face' back to the 'playermade' version, just change the 'Morph Head' field back to 'True' and import a new face. WARNING: Failure to import a face after this change will lead to a corrupted savegamee if you SAVE the changes before importing! - Save and load the savegame to see the changes.
- open Gibbed's Mass Effect 2 Save Editor and load any savegame you want to genderchange.
- Under the 'Raw' tab, '[-] 2. Squad', and a expanded '[+] Player' locate the field called 'Is Female'.
- If you are a 'male' in game, change 'Is Female = False to True'
- If you are a 'female' in game, change 'Is Female = True to False'
- Save and load the game.
Important facts: *IF* you receive a headglitch and plan to play 'a bit' longer or 'permanently' as a new gender, just fix the glitch with the instructions above on 'How to 'import' (i.e. replace) a face' and 'How to get the vanilla hero male/female poster face'. Remember that player generated faces are different for male/female so make sure to have some alternatives in the 'face' directory, or simply use the vanilla poster faces.

[11] How to romance same gender crew members NOT intended by Electronic Arts/BioWare
Optional: In Mass Effect 2 go to Options/Gameplay and turn on: SubtitlesThe only 'same gender' romances which have full recorded voice (Jennifer Hale) is the Morinth and Kelly Chambers ones. All other 'non-intended' romances lack Mark Meer/Jennifer Hale voice-overs. In order to be able to 'experience' a non-intended romance (F/F or M/M) you MUST turn on 'Subtitles' in the game.
You can romance these characters as a female Shepard:
Tali'Zorah nar Rayya
Subject Zero
Miranda Lawson
You can romance these characters as a male Shepard:
Garrus Vakarian
Thane Krios
Jacob Taylor

Play the game with the 'BioWare intended gender' for a romance i.e. male for Tali, then when you get mission to cross into the Omega-4 relay do NOT do it, instead SAVE THE GAME and 'genderchange', then load the genderchanged savegame and open the galactic map, now manually enter the Omega-4 relay. Romance will play out perfect, even after you defeated the collectors and decide to 'keep playing'.
To understand what I talk about, download my F/F Tali romance savegames and read the readme:

[11b] Route 2 (Advanced)
Due to the complicated nature and crash issues many people have had with it, please follow Route 1 if possible, else do as this:Play the game with the gender you want, then do NOT click on the 'personal topic selection' when talking to crew members you plan to romance UNTIL you have done their personal quest. Also, you MUST save your game before you actually (do NOT overwrite it) talk to this person. Now, change your gender to the BioWare INTEDED one for the romance i.e. if you want to romance Tali, be a MALE when you talk with her. When the romance is triggered, change back to your (in this case female) gender and keep playing. Repeat this step when needed i.e. most romances force you to 'genderchange' at least 2 and 3 times to 'advance it'. In Tali's case it's two times. Failure to genderchange at proper time WILL lead to nasty issues. If you think this is to messy, then go Route 1 instead.
